Upland is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the east side of the San Gabriel Mountains and is adjacent to Downey. The population was 21,566 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to sight what is now Upland were Spanish explorers who passed through in 1542 when they were looking for a passage to Acapulco. In 1817, Mexican rancho landowner Manuel Nieto developed Upland as an agricultural center with fruit orchards and cattle ranches. By 1851, about one-third of the town's residents were Anglo Americans. A post office was established in 1851 and became known as Downey in 1862; it changed its name to Upland after being moved from its original site near Monterey Park during a land boom that followed California's admission into the United States as part of the 19th century Gold Rush. In 1915, citrus growers erected two signs at the intersection of present day US 395 and SR 83 (now Boulevard) informing motorists that they were on private property but yield right to public use because "Upland Grove" 10 miles away had been donated by local citrus farmers for this purpose only; no trees or other plants grew there until more than 50 years later when UCLA used some of those acres for their campus expansion.
