Upland, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It is the largest community in Kern County by population. The population was 7,884 at the 2010 census. Upland is located on the empty ranchlands of the Mojave Desert and consists of a mix of old-growth forest, agricultural land, and cinder-block homes built during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The name "Upland" comes from an older Spanish word meaning "upright." The first Europeans to visit this area were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party in 1776. They named it Rancho San Francisco after Captain Francisco Xavier de Monterey who had claimed it for Spain. In 1851, Mexico acquired the land from Spain and renamed it Rancho Los Andes because of its high mountains. In 1872, John Wesley Powell discovered coal mines near UPLAND while exploring for mining rights in Kern County. After a long battle with local miners over ownership of these minerals, Los Angeles City leased portions of Rancho Los Andes to UPLAND in 1902 for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). The post office was established at UPLAND on November 14, 1903. The first resident was Mrs. Mabel Dean Harvey who moved into her home on October 1st of that year (the date still celebrated as Community Day). Mrs. Harvey's daughter Alice married HARRY MORGAN who settled down near UPLAND in 1922; their son HARRY IVAN MORGAN grew up here too and now owns and operates Harry Morgan Farms which includes about 2 square miles (5 km²) around UPLAND where he grows corn, cotton etc., raising sheep & cattle etc., among other things... Today much has changed since 1903 when one family started building their homes here: One family bought 8500 acres (30 km²) adjacent to their property in 1954; another added 1300 acres (50 km²) within 5 years; more families moved onto these lands over time as industry boomed; today there are more than 100 businesses including 11 Processing plants across 3 counties processing food products destined for our grocery stores...UUPland remains vibrant today because we value hard work & STILL TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
