As the world's largest marine mammal sanctuary, Marine Mammal Studies Unit (MMSU) in Upland, California has played an important role in the conservation of marine mammals for more than four decades. MMSU is home to a diverse collection of marine mammals including orcas, seals and sea lions. The units' research focuses on topics such as oceanography, ecology and behavior of these charismatic animals. Marine Mammals Study Unit was founded in 1984 by Drs. Donald W. Smith and Jane Goodall with the goal of preserving the global populations of killer whales and other marine mammals through scientific study and public education. The University’s holdings at MMSU include over 1 million individual specimens from throughout the animal kingdom dating back to when paleontologists first explored coastal seas around 50 mya ago! Museum staff have collected additional species since then including: sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales,at least 26 pilot whale species and many more yet to be discovered! Today’s Marine Mammals Study Unit is one of several federal agencies which comprise NOAA Fisheries’ National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). NMFS is responsible for fishery management activities that affectmarine mammals worldwide-from protecting coastal communities from harmful algal blooms to managing fisheries for sustainable catch.

Upland, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Kern County to the south, Mono County to the east, and Fresno County to the north. The valley was first settled by Native Americans including the Mono people in 7000 BC. In 1848, gold was found on nearby Sierra Nevada range which led to a rush of settlers into what is now Upland. The area became a part of Imperial County when it was formed from parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties in 1876. Today, Upland has a population of over 160,000 with over 50% being white and 30% being Latino. There are several industries that have been headquartered in Upland such as citrus fruits, software development, agricultural products, and health care. The most significant landmark in town is the old jail which still stands today and has been used as an event center ever since.
The area now known as Upland was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who lived in the nearby valleys of Mono and Tuolumne. The Tongva were a Native American people that spoke an Alaskan language. In 1846, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now California and began to explore the region. They discovered the rich gold resources that lay beneath the earth, and soon became involved in a land grabbing process that spread throughout California. In 1848, Governor Manuel Nieto issued a proclamation calling for all residents of California to submit their claims to him for review. This led to a race war between Juan Bautista Santa Ana and Antonio López de Santa Clara, which ended with Santa Clara taking control of most of what is now California. The new regime invited European colonists to set up farms in what is now Upland and other parts of Northern California. By 1850, about 60% of the population living in California was foreign-born, including many Germans, Irishmen and Swedes who had come over on ships from Europe. As part of this new wave of immigration, some Native Americans also moved into what is now Upland from surrounding areas such as Mono County and Sonoma County. These newcomers formed mixed-race communities which continued until after World War II when they were increasingly relegated to reservations or concentration camps near Fresno or Stockton. In 1951, Congress passed legislation designating certain areas within present-day Upland as wilderness preserveland so that future generations would have access to these lands for recreation purposes only (the Wilderness Act). The designation has beenKeepers ever since. Today much of What Is Now Southern Kern County falls within these boundaries; portions also include portions of Nevada's Mojave Desert National Preserve
