The first unit to arrive in California was Company C of the 9th Calvary Infantry Regiment from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1931. In 1942 Company D of the 9th Calvary Infantry Regiment arrived from Elk Grove Village, Illinois and served until 1945. The first active duty unit of the National Guard in Upland was Company K of the 111th Airborne Division which arrived on September 5, 1949 from Palm Springs, California. The division served until 1952 when it moved to Redding where it remains today as a Reserve unit. In 1976 the National Guard movement into Upland began with arrival of Battalion E of the 103rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team which is now known as "Task Force Ranger". After only one year deployment Task Force Ranger returned home and disbanded on November 20, 1977. The battalion's final deployment came in 1978 when they supported Operation Just Cause which led to overthrow of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. In 1981 company B (2nd Battalion) 118th Field Artillery Regiment arrives from Rancho Mirage Army Depot in Riverside County and serves for three years before being deployed to Panama City Beach during Operation Desert Storm on February 15-20 1991 as part of United States Forces Southern Command's First Brigade Combat Team 1st Armored Division[1].
