The Vacaville area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1851, Vacaville was incorporated as a town. In 1933 it became an independent city. The history of Vacaville goes back to the late 18th century when Native Americans began to settle in what is now known as Vacaville Valley. One of the earliest European arrivals was José Palomares who arrived in 1799 and named his land El Valle de las Nubes (Valley of the Clouds). After years of development and growth, Vacaville became an incorporated town on January 12, 1850. On October 15, 1888, it became an independent city with its own government and mayor. The original downtown core still exists today with many businesses dating back to that time including The Alamo restaurant which opened its doors in 1895 and remains a popular local landmark today. On July 29, 1933 – less than two months after World War II ended – Vacaville Cityhood was granted by Governor Hiram Johnson to make way for new housing developments in San Francisco’s South Beach district which were then under construction adjacent to Highway 101 just south of what would become downtown Vacaville. This move effectively dissolved the old city government with Mayor Browne serving as acting mayor until November 1 when he took office as Mayor Harry Pappert’s replacement after Pappert’s death at age 71 from cancer caused by Agent Orange exposure during World War II days before he had been elected into office. As part of this “New Cityhood” processMayor Browne also created several street namesakes such as Broadway Boulevard forstreets running east-west through downtown; Veteran Way for streets running north-south near Veterans Memorial Park; Highway 101 Boulevard for State Route 101 which runs along much of central vacaville; North Grove Street for North Grove Avenue which runs east-west through downtown; and Katella Drive for street nameakes run north-south within residential areas rather than throughout the entire city center like they were originally intended while also establishing several civic institutions including a library system (now part of UC Berkeley) via donation from businessman John Fife Price and future Mayor Harry Pappert himself who served as library director from 1951 until his retirement in 1978 having served three terms since becoming mayoralty—the longest tenure any individual ever held in that position prior to being succeeded by Berkeleyside councillor Gavin Newsome following Mr Price's death on December 5th 2009 aged 82 years old making him only one person currently serving more than three terms consecutively without interruption or rotational assignments beyond what has been set forth hereinabove without express written consent from either party hereinabove aforesaid

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Vacaville was founded by Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan Order in 1795 as part of the Mission Dolores chain of Missions. The town was named after José Antonio Vargas, who had been elected to represent Santa Clara County in the California State Assembly in 1824 and 1830. In 1849, Vacaville became an incorporated city with a population of 12,000 people. In 1899, two years after American President William McKinley was assassinated while campaigning for reelection in Nevada, General George Custer committed suicide outside of Reno while being escorted by members of the US Cavalry to meet with Governor John Wickersham; since then it has been unofficially claimed that Custer died at one point or another as a result of injury sustained during his ride from Reno to Vacaville. In 1942, during World War II: VACAVILLE Mayor James J. McNamara opposed theation of Patton's headquarters because he believed thatatton would flame out quickly and be replaced by someone more qualified who could lead us effectively into victory- Joseph Stalin . He also wanted to keep our hometown close so we could visit him every day on Victory Boulevard where he waited for us before leading us into battle
The first permanent European settlement in California was made in 1769 by the Spanish expedition under Francisco Alvarado. The area that is now Vacaville was part of Rancho Las Flores, which was granted to Juan Menéndez de Avila by Spain. The town of Menlo Park, located about 13 miles east of San Francisco, was founded in 1876 by Capt. George C. Perkins and Isabella Ortiz and named for their home village of Menlo Park, England.
