The name Vacaville comes from Spanish meaning "vale of the flowers." The first Europeans to visit what is now Vacaville were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their way to Mexico in 1542. In 1872, George C. Perkins built a sawmill here and named it after Vacaville, California's second largest city at the time - because he thought that would be a more auspicious name for a small town than either of those larger cities had received. In 1902, Alfred Payson Weems founded the American Paper Mill in Vacaville and began producing high quality paper products such as brochures and postcards. That mill continues to produce papers today under various names including Alameda Paper Products Company, Valley Paper Products Company, New America Paper Mills Inc., Pacific Paper Products Company (now PEI Asia Pacific) and ABC Corporation (now Alliant Techsystems). During World War II, many people worked at Alameda Paper Mill which produced military uniforms for local troops. After the war ended and most of the plant was closed down due to lack of demand from soldiers who had moved away or retired, most of the building went up in flames in 1952 as part of an effort by then-Mayor Harry Byrd to demolish all nonessential buildings within city limits. However, only one wing caught fire; firefighters were able to save much of the rest of structure with no loss of life or any damage done beyond minor smoke inhalation among workers inside buildings which still stand today despite being vacant for over 50 years! The following year saw another large fire when parts of an aluminum factory next door caught on fire during renovation work; this again resulted in no loss whatsoever other than some minor property damage outside structures which still stand today despite being vacant for over 50 years! In 1984 two men walked into a construction site belonging to Apple Incorporated off Old Highway 395 near Red Bluff without warning anyone else about it because they believed that Jobs would be there working on his new company headquarters - instead, Jobs died soon afterwards while testing out his new computer system on campus at Apple Computer Inc.. The men are now considered martyrs for Apple Incorporation because their actions helped set off an arms race between Microsoft Windows 95/98 users who believed they had discovered a bug with that software that could have blown up everything - and those same Microsoft Windows 95/98 users who credit them with saving both their company and their software development method!
