The captain and his wife soon became involved in local politics, serving as members of the Vacaville Town Council from 1853 to 1861. In 1871, Captain Cranch married again and this time he moved his family to Clovis where he built a new home on State Street. His second home was larger than his first but it burned down within months of its establishment. He rebuilt it quickly however, becoming one of Clovis's most prosperous citizens over the years. Captain Cranch even donated land to build an addition to Clovis's courthouse which still stands today! Captain Cranch is credited with being one of the first people to import canned goods into California from Illinois via stagecoach connections back in 1872-3 ( jammed into tight spaces between mountains ). This event initiated what would eventually become known as "the Cannery Revolution". CaptainCranch also donated land for various civic improvements such as a schoolhouse and church which remain prominent today including Vacaville High School .

Cook started a tannery and bakery near where he lived and also cultivated some land for crops and raised hogs. Other early residents included John Ayer (born October 6th, 1793), Isaac Higgs (April 1st1794), Eli Whitney (October 5th1807), Amos Kendall (September 10th1812), Joshua Chamberlain (March 8th1815) Mennonites named Brandeis came to this area about 1840s; they began settling along geographical lines rather than religious denominations Mrs Rebecca Brown settled here about 1850s—later known as Rebecca Barton; her husband Peter Brown took up farming here about 1860s; their son Byron Barton joined them about 1870 ; later became an electrical engineer Mrs Barton donated land to buildthe First Methodist Church of Pleasant Hill today’s First Baptist Church there circa 1880 . After the church’s construction occurred one more time: June 9th 1888 when Mrs Jane Addams donated land southeast of town for use as a school ground .
