Vacaville, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 14,032 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County and within Fresno County. Vacaville is known for its agricultural production and wine industry. The first Europeans to visit what is now Vacaville were missionaries in 1824. Jesuit Father Francisco Gomez called it "Nueva Vizcaya" (New Valencia). A post office was established at Vacaville on April 15, 1848, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1868, the Mormon pioneers arrived here from Utah during the great migration westward. They named their new settlement Nauvoo after Joseph Smith's home city of Nauvoo, Illinois. The town was renamed by General George Custer when he reached it on July 24, 1870 while retreating from an engagement with Mexican forces near Bakersfield south of Yosemite National Park. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed here as part of the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Training Command which flew training missions over Tulare Lake for members of theAAF Ninth Air Force training mission squadrons then being activated at Sanger Field northeast of Visalia and Davis-Monthan AFB northwest of Tucson Arizona Territory aircraft bomber units engaged in army air operations against Japan during Operation Iwo Jima including attacks on Tokyo Bay on February 2-3 1945 as part of Operation Battleaxe; also parts played role in air strikes against targets inland including Hiroshima/Aomori Prefecture on August 6 1945)
