The Vallejo Army National Guard is one of the oldest military units in California. It has been a part of the state’s defense since 1846. The unit traces its roots to an organization known as the Volunteers, which was created on July 4th, 1846 by Captain George Carr and other soldiers from Mission San Francisco de Asís. In 1861, the volunteers were called up for service in the American Civil War. They fought in both the North and South. The unit saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. After the war ended, many of these veterans returned to their home states and formed new volunteer organizations. Some of these organizations became Cavalry Regiments (later Infantry Battalions) or even regiments of infantry. In 1865, two cavalry regiments were consolidated into one regiment under command of Major General James Hahneman – this was also when Vallejo County was added to California’s Union army! In 1879, another cavalry regiment was organized and assigned to our battalion under command of Colonel George O’Neill – this battalion served until 1898! In 1901-1902 another regiment (the 9th) was disbanded because too few young men had enlisted! However there are still active Vallejo Troops who serve with distinction today!

The United States Army Garrison Vallejo was established in 1846 at the Presidio of Monterey. The garrison was first stationed at what is now Fort Point, but moved to its present location in 1857. The U.S. military presence in Vallejo began with the construction of Fort Tejon in 1849 and grew steadily over the years. In 1861, Vallejo became an important staging ground for the American Civil War as it served as a supply depot and storage depot for ammunition shipments from Southern California. After the war, Vallejo remained an important military installation until its closure in 1949.
Vallejo is a small town in the Central California Coast Region, located on Hwy. 101 between condition and Martinez. The population was 27,841 at the 2010 census. Vallejo is the easternmost city in San Francisco County and the entire Bay Area. It is also one of two cities that make up Silicon Valley. The Mission street grid was laid out in 1836 by Father Junipero Serra as part of his plan to create an agricultural area around San Francisco Bay. At first, only wealthy Rancho Californios were allowed to live in what became Vallejo because it was part of Appian Way land grant from Governor Manuel Folsom to José Altamirano de la Costa y Pavón. When some of these people started farming there, they decided to name their community after General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had helped them win their independence from Mexico in 1847. In 1881, property near present day Mountain View acquired by Jerald Culp for $10USD which he then subdivided into plazas or streets named after Spanish explorers, military commanders and other notable Californians (including Juan Bautista Alvarado, Domingo Pena Nieto and José Felipe Carrillo). Most notably Don Genaro Orozco bought 3/4ths of section 24 from Jerald Culp for $270USD which gave him control over much of southern Vallejo and its environs until his death in 1951. The rest went through various hands until it passed away with new rights granted by JRTC on Feb 2nd 1959 when Community Development District No 8 (CDP 8) was created following passage of Proposition 218 (which would have annexed much more than just most of southern Vallejo).
