ValleJOs rich maritime history begins with its namesake Juan Bautista Orozco sailing from Stockton to Monterey Bay aboard his ship "Almirante Insurgente" on December 12, 1776 for supplies bound for Acapulco during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). The harbor here also served as an important point of embarkation for treasure seekers such as Hernán Cortés during his campaigns against Mexico in 1542 and 1543. On April 16, 1850 José Joaquin El Cerrito surmounted an 8-hour ordeal after setting out from near San Francisco's Chinatown following news that gold had been discovered overland at Sutro Heights some 25 miles to the east near Redwood City; he became one of only two people ever documented crossingnumberless miles of difficult mountain country before finding payable gold nuggets himself some weeks later while exploring milepost 24 on January 10th,...
Vallejo was founded by Juan Vallejo in 1776 as the mission town of San Francisco de Asís. The area that is now Vallejo was part of Rancho Santiago de Atascadero, which belonged to José Joaquín Mora y Buenaventura. In 1836, the land that makes up Vallejo became part of the Rancho Rinconada Mexican land grant given to Mariano Castro and his brother Anastasio Cerda. The name "Vallejo" originated from a Spanish phrase meaning "valley of wine." The first store opening in Vallejo was the Hotel California on Main Street in 1887.
