The history of coffee in Vallejo, California can be traced back to the early 1800s. In those days, coffee was a sacred commodity that was enjoyed by both men and women. One of the first people to discover and trade coffee in Vallejo was Antonio Sanchez de la Vega. He likely started trading beans from his farmstead on Martinez Road near present-day El Sobrante Boulevard. In 1848, José Joaquín Murillo y Zabala founded the Sociedad Española de Ganaderos de Santa Clara (Spanish Society for Dairy Farming) in Vallejo to improve the quality of milk from sheep and cows within the town. TheSociety purchased land at Rancho Rinconada and began raising cattle there. From this start, ranching became an important facet of Vallejano life. In 1876, when Vallejano Mayor Manuel Gomez Pacheco organized a town meeting to discuss creating a new civic center, he suggested building a market house on Market Street near San Pablo Avenue so that merchants could sell their goods directly to consumers without having to go through local merchants. This idea was quickly adopted and Coffee Row developed around the future Civic Center site (now First National Bank). Since its inception, Coffee Row has been home to some of Northern California’s most popular cafes including The Café Du Nord (1898), Harry’s Bar & Grille (1956), Joe’s Pizza (1968), Starbucks(1999), Lululemon Athletica(2011), and BCBG Max Azria(2013). A town of just over 20,000 people in Sonoma County, Vallejo was founded by the Donation of Blood Group on November 5, 1847. The original settlement was located on the east side of San Francisco Bay and included only men. The first post office opened in 1851 and the first school was built in 1854. In 1865, a ferry service operated between Vallejo and Sausalito. On July 8, 1868, an earthquake struck the area causing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. The town changed its name to Vallejo on December 1st that year in order to reflect its new status as a post-quake city. The population reached 100,000 by 1900 but decreased to 50,000 by 1910 due to technological advances such as automobiles and radios which made Valley City unnecessary. However, with the development of the Interstate Highway System and ensuing increased traffic, Vallejo experienced significant growth beginning in the 1970s. By 2000 it had reached its current size of around 70,000 residents.
