In 1849, John Sutter founded an agricultural colony at Fort Bragg near Yosemite National Park with about forty people including twelve men from Vallejo. On July 16, 1850, he reported that he had found gold on Mission Point about 12 miles south of where he had set up camp two years earlier; this claim led to his name being associated with Gold Rush days in California In 1861-1862 three companies from Nevada arrived at Fort Bragg under command of Major General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War - one company served under Captains Cornelius Vanderbilt (the Commodore) and James Fenton Beebe Both companies deserted within a few weeks after arrival but their commanders continued with their march until they reached Reno where they disbanded One group consisting mostly Irish Americans prospecting for coal near here also disbanded soon afterwards Vining Bros Mining Co used some slaves who did some digging work nearby 1863-1864 when gold discoveries started there
