Army gift history in Victorville, California began with the United States Army's arrival on September 6, 1846. The men of Company K of the 9th Infantry Regiment were the first to enter California. The regiment was organized at Fort Yuma and assigned to duty at Santa Fé Rancho Cucamonga. On October 15, 1846, Captain John Sibley led a detachment of Company K upon leave from Santa Fé Rancho Cucamonga to camp at what is now known as Echo Lake. From here they started their long journey westward across the state of California. Along the way they acquired much equipment and supplies for their new home in central California. On November 17,1846, when Company K reached Victoria (now Victorville), captain Sibley took his unit into tents and erected a temporary court-house on present day Main Street near Eastcenter Boulevard. The first post office in Victorville was established on December 2nd, 1847 by Hiram Bogan under license from Governor Manuel Miranda. A store was built by Jno Witherow on what is now First Street in 1865 which served as town hall until 1888 when it burned down due to an arsonist. In 1893 Captain Samuel Hodge opened up Hodge's Store which became one of the most popular general stores in town until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1898 Colonel James Biddle donated land north of town for a military cemetery that eventually would be named after him - James Biddle Military Cemeteryigger Gardens today). The area now known as ECHO LKM also contains two large cannons used during World War II (the M1A2 Patton cannon recovered from Imperial Beach and laterinstalledat ECHO LKM). This early suggestion led to construction of one of the first water towers in America! In 1912 it was reported that there were no people living within five miles of what later became downtown Victorville because they had been forced off their original homesteads due to drought conditions brought about by climate change. With only 9 acres remaining undeveloped within present-day downtownVictorville (including 4 lots currently used as part of City Hall), Mayor Waddell introduced legislation calling for annexation by neighboring cities due to growing population demand. On July 20th 1913 voters approved annexation by Pasadena & Orange Counties with a population exceeding 100% majority! I n 1923 Mayor Stroud proposed adding Junction City which had recently annexed portions of Riverside County & had begun developing its own core operations including lumberyards & other businesses adjacent thereto; however this proposal also failed due lack Of support From Councilmembers Afterward he made an unsuccessful attempt To get approval For Annexation Of Needles By Bell Gardens Finally On January 15th 1928 councilapproved Annexation Of Needles By Arroyo Grande pending final review And Notice To Residents . Victorville was founded in 1868 by George C. Marshall and named for General Winfield Scott Victor, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. It is located on the Kern River in Bakersfield County, California. The population of Victorville was 9,869 at the 2000 census. The town became a city in 1966 and has since grown to an estimated population of over 120,000 people. It is home to two large military bases: Fort Irwin and Goodyear Army Air Field. The first settlement at Victorville was near what is now known as Briggs Avenue and Main Street. A post office was established here on December 11, 1868, with Wm Hite as its first clerk. In 1870, a store building and wagon wheel factory were built on Briggs Avenue across from present day Del Norte High School (now called Del Norte Community College). This factory produced wagons for local farmers and served as the initial headquarters of the United States Post Office at Victorville until it moved to Bakersfield in 1907. In 1875, George C Marshall purchased land north of the town limits along what is now Interstate 5 for $5 per acre ($50 per km2). He renamed his new town "Victorville" after General Winfield Scott Victor who had fought during the Mexican-American War. After three years of development work, Marshall's "Village" began housing residents on July 1st, 1880. By 1886 there were 350 homes within the limits of what later became Victorville City Limits; today there are more than 12 thousand citizens living within its boundaries On January 15th 1898 President William McKinley delivered a speech before a crowd of 10 thousand people assembled at Centennial Park south of downtown Victorville while attending Expo '98 celebrations being held locally It should be noted that this event took place just one week after American entry into World War I which caused an increase in traffic on I-5 which affected both San Bernardino County and Kern County economies In 1920 Vernon resident Harry Daugherty organized a baseball team which played against teams from nearby Visalia (then part of Tulare County) beginning that season In 1923 Vernon's first high school opened with grades 8-12 called Vernon Junior High School vernoncitizen high school opened august 24th1968
