Victorville is located in Inyo County, California and was founded in 1868. It is the seat of Victorville City government. The population was estimated at 94,827 as of 2018. Victorville has a temperate continental climate with mild winters and hot summers. The town is bordered by Owens Valley to the east, Mono Lake to the south-southwest, the San Gabriel Mountains to the west and north-northwest, and Sleepy Hollow Creek to the northwest. The name "Victorville" was derived from Josephine Guerin's husband John Victor who married her in 1848 in what is now Lone Pine Canyon near Yosemite National Park. The original adobe buildings were built around 1860 by local ranchers General James Halleck and his wife Mary Ann Dodge Halleck for their cattle ranch which extended from Lone Pine Canyon northeastward into present-day Atwater Village on Clear Lake. In 1868, A Braidwood & Co., merchants, opened a store at Fourth Street and Main Avenue (now part of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) in what later became known as downtown Victorville. This store served as an early trade center for residents of both rural Inyo County and eastern Doña Ana County along State Route 61 or "the old road." There were no roads west of Rancho Cucamonga until after World War II when they were widened and constructed primarily by state highway builders bypassing small towns on their way to larger cities like Los Angeles or Phoenix. Downtown Victorville contained four stores - A Braidwood & Co., J C Smith's grocery store, Wm Fenton flour millinery and Julius Weininger dry goods store - all serving customers through side streets branching off Main Avenue between 4th Street NW (later renamed Independence Avenue) NW and 5th Street NW during its first years; these businesses remained open until 1918 whenMain Avenue underwent reconstruction following a large earthquake that destroyed many homes on either side of it near downtown including A Braidwood & Co.'s building which collapsed resulting in $5 million damage ($100 million adjusted for inflation). The history of Victorville began with gold seekers seeking fortune in what is now central California during the late 19th century. In 1887, three men prospecting for gold near present-day Victorvilleilles choice spot discovered rich veins of Gold and silver ore on an old Indian reservation east of downtown San Bernardino County; they named their new town after General George Custer’s regiment that had fought in the Mexican-American War two years earlier. At first, only a few families lived here; but soon other miners started arriving to hear about this treasure trove waiting below the surface of the earth – until all traces of it had been lost forever when new finds were made nearby over time (see also: Sutter’s Mill Massacre). In 1915 Mayor John Jourdan helped get City Hall built on Pershing Avenue just east ofpresent-day Main Street; he also lobbied Congress for passage of legislation creating City Hall Records Office which opened on July 1st, 1916 under then-Mayor Arent Janssen (1915 - 1918).
