Victorville is a city located in the Mojave Desert of California, within the San Bernardino County metropolitan area. The population was 97,711 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th most populous city in California. Victorville is known for its agricultural production and its location by Interstate 805 as one of the few cities that remain unspoiled by development. The first Europeans to visit what is now Victorville were members of Juan Bautista de Anza's party on his journey from Mexico City to Yosemite in 1817. de Anza's camp was located near present-day Victorville when he reported back to Spanish Captain José Joaquin Cerón about his discovery on July 27, 1817. At this time there were no settlements in or around what is now Victorville and only scattered fires could be seen rising from the scrublands east of Old US Route 66. In 1881, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Victorville and began mining operations which led to rapid growth in the town during that decade. The First National Bank and Union Pacific Railroad arrived shortly thereafter and soon made Victorville one of the largest towns west of Sacramento. Victorville is a center of the Victor Valley appellation which encompasses much of Inyo County east of Yosemite National Park and north of Mono Lake. The first Europeans to visit the area were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on November 17, 1769, when they sighted what they thought was an uninhabited range of mountains about south-southeast of present-day Victorville. They named the range "Mountain Pass" after their guide and leader, Pedro Fages y Crespo. De Anza's party passed by it again on February 10, 1770 while exploring downriver from Monterey to San Francisco Bay. In 1838 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna built Fort Pointe on the eastern bank of Mono Lake as part of his efforts to secure control over Mono Lake for Mexico. The fort served as an artillery outpost during both Mexican–American War (1846–48) and Spanish–American War (1912). It was abandoned in 1912 and later destroyed by fire. The town was founded on October 15, 1886 by Jens Jensen with 50 residents; it became a city on July 5, 1907 under then-Mayor John Ahernystroms leadership. On December 12th 1906 Mayor Ahernystrom died suddenly while attending a business meeting in Los Angeles; his body was never found despite extensive search procedures led by Deputy Sheriff Harry Kappenheimer Jr..
