Victorville is a city in Inyo County, California. The population was 7,452 at the 2010 census. Victorville is located about east of Yosemite National Park and west of Mono Lake. The city was founded in 1875 by prospectors John C. Frémont and George W. Booth, who named it for General José Joaquín de Arguello y Godoy, Conde de la Vega y Costilla, governor of Peru from 1796 to 1800. The first post office in Victorville opened on October 15, 1875. It was renamed Independence on July 1st of the following year due to the town's growing importance as a supply depot for the California Gold Rush and its location near Mono Lake which attracted many miners during that time period because of its ample water resources. The town began to grow and be developed when a post office was established in 1870, a school was opened in 1872, and a hotel was built in 1874. In 1889, the railroad arrived and Victorville became an important transportation center. A new courthouse and jail were constructed in 1903. The population peaked at over 10,000 people in 1928 but declined rapidly after World War II because of reductions in industry and social services.
