Downtown also contains several large cultural attractions such as The Shakespeare Theatre District which houses two theaters with seating for 2,000 spectators each; Plaza de las Americas which features shopping malls including Macy's and Sears; and 450-seat Pahlavi Stadium which hosts various events such as soccer matches and international meetings. These cultural attractions help make downtown Visalia one of North America's most popular tourist destinations while at the same time providing opportunities for locals to learn about American culture. Visalia, California was founded in 1848 by the American Missionaries as a mission town on the Sacramento River. However, during World War I, Visalia went through a difficult period and lost much of its population; only 20 percent of its residents remained in 1919 when the war ended. In 1847, the California gold rush began, and by 1850, the town of Visalia had sprung up. The population grew rapidly due to the influx of miners and their families. By 1871, Visalia had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the most heavily populated towns in California. The town's growth was halted by bad luck: in 1872, an Earthquake hit Visalia and destroyed many buildings. The town slowly recovered but never regained its previous level of prosperity. In fact, during the 1930s, Visalia experienced a period of economic decline which contributed to its high levels of poverty.
