The Visalia Army National Guard has been in existence since the late 1800s. The unit was activated as the 1st Battalion, 6th Regiment on October 11, 1892. The battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment on February 14, 1916. On November 16, 1917, the battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 8th Battalion, 7th Regiment. The battalion was mobilized for World War II on August 29, 1940 and served until September 2nd 1945 when it returned to civilian control. On July 17th 1951 the battalion was again mobilized for military service in Korea where it served until May 15th 1953 when it returned home to Visalia. After its return home the battalion changed its name to theVisalia Army National Guard 9 th Infantry Division on October 6 th 1956. The division served during Vietnam and then made a return trip to Korea in 1973-1975 after being activated there that year. It would stay in South Korea until 1978 before relocating back to Visalia where it remained until 1984 when it finally disbanded due to budget cuts within the Department of Defense.

In 1851, when California became a state, the mission’s land became part of what is now Visalia. The early years of Visalia’s growth were difficult because there were few resources available. However, through hard work and determination, the town slowly began to grow and develop into what it is today. Starting with a small population of just over 100 people in 1859, Visalia soon became one of the most important towns in central California due to its burgeoning economy and location on Highway 9A – which allowed for easy access to both goods and passengers alike. Over time, however, Visalia’s economy started to decline as new transportation techniques such as railroads came into play. However, despite this setback,Visalia continued to grow rapidly until 1907 when an oil well burst near downtown causing a major financial blow for the city. Despite this setback though - Visalia continue growing steadily until 1949 when they reached their current size with almost 2 million residents living within boundaries that include modern day Temecula Valley along with portions of Agoura Hills and Carlsbad Caverns National Park
On February 12, 1858, the town of Visalia was founded by Captain George S. Goodwin and his wife. The town was named after General Antonio M. Vallejo, who served as a colonel in the Mexican-American War and died in 1857 at the age of 43. Goodwin also donated land to the town for its first school and church. The first post office was established in Visalia on April 1, 1859. On July 1, 1860, the name of the town changed to Visalia California after becoming a U.S. state
