The name of the city comes from Spanish explorer Lawandao de Visalia, who named it after his native village of Villa del Rey which he sighted while exploring the area in 1827. This purchase included what is now downtown Visalia and parts of present-day Fresno and Hanford Counties. In 1850, Josefina Maria Cisneros purchased part of Del Norte County from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $848/acre (2 km² or 0.14 sq mi). She donated this land east of Present-dayVisalia to the Townsite Association in 1853 because she felt her donation would be too large to carry out by force; she only agreed to donate it if all property within a certain radius would become a town site as well. The first town meeting held in this area took place on July 11th,1854 at the home of Mrs. Gorman with about 30 people present including Mr. Shingleton who had also offered membership into the new town site association! On November 5th 1860 another meeting was called to discuss boundaries between townships Rusk and Nuevo Ixtapa when it became apparent that some properties within bothtownships had already been donated by others so there were no contiguous townsites available! A committee was formed consistingof Messrs.(JF?)Shingleton( Chairman), WmSpencer( Secretary), GeoMason(Treasurer)and myself with instructions to survey all property within our respective boundaries & report back immediately!!! After much debate we arrived at a boundary line between twotownshipsRuskandNuevoIxtapa which formed today’s downtown Visalia! On January 1st 1861 another committee was appointedto surveyeallpropertywithinourrespective boundaries &reportbackimmediately!!! This final agreement resulted in what is now Pioneer Square!! By 1870 there were over 100 citizens livingintheTownsite Associationwitha varietyofhouses&buildings!. When Mayor Coleman purchased portionsoftheCityofDaly CityfromEDISON Utilities Incorporatedfor$10/acre(2 km²or0.30 sq mi)in1975 visalecommitted tothenewcityhood!! Today’s Downtown Visalia owes its beginningtoMayor ColemanwhohelpedfoundetheschoolDistrictonApril251970!!!!
