The Visalia Guard Armory was founded in 1881 by Captain George A. Hildebrand and Corporal John S. Jorgensen as a storeroom for the local militia. The armory quickly became popular among locals for its excellent firearms selection and booming trade in ammunition, firearms, and other military supplies. In 1916, the armory was sold to the city of Visalia and it continued to be used as an arsenal until 1941 when it was taken over by the National Guard Bureau. From then on, the armory functioned as a storage facility for military equipment and supplies belonging to various state and local organizations throughout California. Today, the Visalia Armament Museum remains a popular destination for visitors who appreciate America's ongoing commitment to arms manufacturing and national defense. The museum offers an interesting range of exhibits on weaponry from Revolutionary War era cannons to modern assault rifles. The first national guard unit was called the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, which was raised by George Washington in response to the French and Indian War. In 1866, the 2d Regiment of Dragoons was organized as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1933, two battalions of the 9th Infantry were formed as part of Roosevelt's New Deal to protect President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his election campaign. In 1946, two battalions of the 12th Infantry were formed as part of Johnson's Great Society programs to provide security for presidential inaugurations and other important events. There have been many changes over time with regards to how the National Guard is used within the United States; however, one constant has been its role in providing support for our country’s military efforts both at home and abroad.

In 1866, the city incorporated as it grew to become one of California's most important agricultural towns. The city's first mayor, James A. Wickersham, was elected after being appointed by Governor John Brougham. During World War I, Visalia played an important role in the defense of California against a German attack from Oregon that resulted in more than $2 million in damage to property and human life. In 1955, the City Council voted 1-0 to accept annexation by Fresno because of its growing population and importance in the state economy. Fresno also offered Visalia much-needed financial assistance during its growth period which helped make it a thriving community today. Many major businesses have been located within walking distance of each other in downtown Visalia - including General Motors (1929), Panasonic (1977), Kaiser Permanente (1981), and FedEx Ground (2006). In recent years, there has been significant redevelopment taking place throughout downtown with new restaurants and shops opening up along with residential projects complete or under construction such as Park Placee Village and Park Placee Landing The historic district around town is also seeing some redevelopment with several new hotels/condos built as well as retail space being available for mixed use development if desired
In 1871, the first post office in Visalia was established. By 1881, the town had a population of around 100 people. In 1907, the railroad came through Visalia and made it easier for people to get goods and services to their families back home. The town started growing again and by 1950, it had reached its current size with over 1,000 residents.
