Tom was a grocery store owner and his family started brewing their own coffee on their property. The first commercially-owned smallbatch coffee house in Visalia was Donuts & Coffee at 237 Elm Street in 1954. In 1978, Bob Evans opened his first smallbatch restaurant in Visalia, and began serving small batches of beans direct to consumers. Today, there are more than 50 smallbatch coffee shops throughout Visalia and its surrounding counties.

In 1954, National Coffee Corporation merged with American Tobacco Company to form Philip Morris International Incorporated. Visalia Coffee continued to be a subsidiary of Philip Morris until 1984 when it was sold to The Peet's Tea & Coffee Company.

It also produces onions, garlic, chili peppers, flowers, cattle, pigs and poultry. The first Europeans to visit what is now Visalia were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. They found the valley uninhabitable because of the rugged hills that surrounded it. There are many stories about how the area got its name: one says that an early settler named Visaloma used to tell his children that when they went exploring outside their homes they would see a great white bear walking around - so he named the place "Bear Valley" after it. Another story tells of a man who lost his way while traveling downriver and happened upon a beautifulreek where he stopped for dinner. After dinner he started upriver again but couldn't find his way back home so he called himself "Rivera" (ravine). So Visalia got its name from him! Another theory suggests that one of the first people to live in what is now Visalia was José Antonio Vizcaino who settled there in 1824 with other Spaniards working on Rancho Santa Rita de Toole from Buenos Aires County Argentina. Some think this may have been where Bear Valley derived its name from since Jose Antonio Vizcaino likely visited Bear River near present day Dixon during 1825-26 AD! settlers began arriving here formally by 1850 when Captain George Atherton granted Rancho Gabriela to Fernando Romero – making it one of the most important grants ever made in Alta California! In 1851 Banning sold Rancho Santa Rita de Toole back to Spain which then turned it over to American ranch hands under Army Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Whitney! This allowed thousands more Californians including families like those of Fernando Romero – some of whom had worked on Banning's ranchos since 1800 – access land in what becameVisalia! By 1865 all Mexican land east of Rio Grande had been transferred westward into various states includingAlaska Territory due to US annexation!!! Most Mexicans left during this period although a few did stay until after Mexican Independence on July 14th1821!!! In 1876 Japanese Americans were brought here as part of military operations against Issei (Japanese) nationals living east of Baja California Peninsula during World War II!. They arrived via train through Fresno County then walked across country through central Los Angeles county before finally being placed in towns like Sierra Vista (now Chula Vista), Carlsbad (now Miramar), and Van Nuys (now Norwalk)! Many men died or returned home prematurely due primarily to disease but also because life aboard ship was very difficult given extremely cramped quarters and lack Of food!! Visalia saw several dramatic changes during World War II: first came rationing which led to more than 20% unemployment; second came Japan's surrender which ended hostilities; third was local pro-American sentiment following general public anger at government mismanagement leading up to war.; fourth was Japanese evacuation/inclusion into United States; fifth were Generals' orders prohibiting any kindof assistance or aid going out TO JAPANESE AMERICANS IN THE VALLEY;; sixth were days fullOf fear as troops closed Ingress northerly thru Vallejo Canyon;; seventh wenething changed once Americans heard rumors OF GERMAN INVASION possibilities; eighth wenething changed further when General MacArthur landed at Morro Bay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally following Japanese surrender & entry into United States forces arrived last major contingent OF JAPANESE AMERICANS IN VISALIA!!!!!!!!!
