It is with great sadness that we must report the loss of a dear member of the USAF Deployed Gift History Team. Colonel (Ret) Donny L. Armstrong passed away on Saturday, November 17th after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 41 years old and had served in the USAF for more than 25 years. Colonel Armstrong was an amazing individual who was deeply committed to his military service and loved spending time at home with his wife and two children. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Donny's deployment gift history began in 1992 when he joined the USAF as an airman 1st class. Over the next several years, he earned his wings and flew numerous missions throughout Southwest Asia, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991. From 1993-1996, he served as commander of Air Forces Europe Command's detachment responsible for providing gifts to NATO members states during their visit to Germany. In 1998, Colonel Armstrong was selected to become commandant of the United States Air Force Academy's commanding officer position where he remained until his death. During his tenure as commandant, Colonel Armstrong helped create a new cadre of leadership within the Academy which continues to make strides today - one that is focused on preparing young officers for careers inair force service worldwide. In addition to his military service career, colonel Armstrong also enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, golfing and playing tennis; however, he will be most remembered for his love of giving back to society through donations towards various causes such as pediatric cancer research or homeless veterans' charities . His passion for helping others stemmed from watching friends suffer while servinghis country abroad and knowing that there could be much good accomplished if just a few individuals put their effort into making a difference."
