Fresh roasted coffee was first introduced to the market in Vista, California in the early 1990s by two entrepreneurs, Jay Sarewitz and Rick Freund. The pair started a small roastery and coffee shop in an old grocery store in Vista known as the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. The business quickly grew and they soon opened a second location in downtown Vista. In 1996, they moved their manufacturing operation to nearby San Marcos and continued to produce fresh roasted coffee under the name of "The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf".
Vista is a city located in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles east of Sacramento. Vista is the seat for Stanislaus County and has a population of over 150,000 as of 2010. The City of Vista was founded on February 14, 1964 by developer Harry Chandler with the intent to create a town in the valley that would be accessible from both Northridge and Redding. The first phase of development was an agricultural area called Rancho Santa Rita which became home to some of America's largest open-air retail stores including Macy's, Sears and J.C. Penney. Once the initial shopping mall project failed to take off, Chandler turned his attention to creating what would become one of Northern California's most popular cities – Vista Beach. The mixed use district that now encompasses much of downtown opened its doors in 1972 and has since seen significant redevelopment as it becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California. In recent years, growth in Vista has been fueled by large-scale apartment projects such as Microsoft Place and South Campus Tower (the latter being Blume & Partners' tallest building). With more than 1 million residents now living within city limits, redevelopment continues apace with plans unveiled for new high-rise apartments at various locations throughout downtown; along busy arterial streets near State Route 237; and even into older neighborhoods like Point Loma which are being revitalized through greenfield developments anchored around theme parks like Universal Studios Hollywood or SeaWorld San Diego/Delaware Park. Despite these forward momentum initiatives, there remains much work to be done before Vista can truly claim its place as one of Northern California's " Golden Arches."

In 1928, Starbucks was founded by Howard Schultz with the goal of providing quality coffee at a price people could afford.
The city of Vista was founded in 1885 by James Irvine. It became a separate incorporated town in 1907 and a full city in 1912. The current City Hall, erected in 1928, is the only surviving structure from Vista's early years. In 1944, during World War II, Vista was the site of the largest concentration of Japanese Americans in California. A large air-raid shelter was built on North First Street, and many residents were able to stay inside during the attack.
The first Europeans to reach California were Spanish traders and missionaries in the late 16th century. The area that is now California was part of Alta California, a province of Mexico, until 1821 when it became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War. In 1848, California was organized as a U.S. state, and Calafia became its capital.
