Grant made an undeveloped parcel south of what is now I-5 his personal rancho grant under the General Land Act of 1893 (). This parcel became known as Grant Ranch after him and later became part of University Park while still being managed by Irvine family descendants until it passed out of their hands to be bought by city officials including Mayor Dianne Feinstein on October 2nd 1984

The new nation was founded with a mission: to protect its citizens from their enemies both abroad and at home. And so it was that America's first major effort in California took place: the Battle of Adobe Walls, which occurred on November 25,1846. Commodore John D. Sloat led a naval force of about seventy ships against an army of about five hundred Mexicans commanded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Despite numerical superiority, the Americans were forced to retreat after achieving only limited results; Santa Anna himself escaped without being captured or killed. This victory marked a turning point for America's involvement in California; from then on, Washington would put more emphasis on doling out land grants rather than fighting wars with Mexico
