Fremont made an expedition into the Bear Valley and discovered rich deposits of ground coffee beans. In 1869, Colonel Wm. H. Eaton developed a process for manufacturing espresso beans that became known as “Eaton’s Process”. In 1906, Italian immigrants Giovanni and Rosa Castelli opened up Castelli Coffee & Pastry on Congress Way in Vista. They started brewing Italian-style espresso (known as corteccia) to serve their customers in their shop and also sold single serve packets of the beverage outside the store until 1955 when they closed down due to health concerns about lead exposure from their ovens. The popularity of Tactical Coffee began to grow in the 1990s after entrepreneur Larry Peet started importuning his friends who lived near him with keurig brewers to brew tactical coffee at home using pre-packaged filters anduerans). In 1960, portions of Vista were annexed into the City of San Diego. In 1998, City Council voted to name Vista "America's Best Place to Live" by Newsweek magazine.
