Walnut Creek is located on the eastern edge of San Ramon Valley and has a long history as an agricultural center for almonds and other nuts. The first humans to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered wild fruits and vegetables. A post office was established in 1868, but it did not take off until 1870 when Alfred G. Bechtol started delivering mail from his ranch east of Walnut Creek. In 1875, John Sutter discovered vast acres of rich soil in what would become Walnut Creek; he began farming there soon after. In 1897, entrepreneur Waddell Johnson founded the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). PG&E built one of the largest electric utilities in North America with its original substation west of town near present-day Big Valley Road. PG&E remains one of Contra Costa's largest employers today with over 21,000 employees statewide including 11,500 in Walnut Creek proper and 5,000 more across its subsidiary companies. During World War II many Japanese soldiers were interned here during their incarceration at Camp Radcliffe near San Ramon Valley before being moved to other camps throughout California pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which banned all Japanese Americans from entering the United States without special permission from the Department of Justice - an event that will forever be remembered as "the internment camp days". Today much of Camp Radcliffe still exists within walnut creek boundaries as part of Alamo Heights Park demographics
