The Army National Guard was created in 1898 and has served the United States of America since that time. The Guard is a part of the federal military, which is separate from the U.S. Constitution and Congress. In Walnut Creek, California, the Army National Guard has played an important role in our history. One of the first units to be activated on October 15th, 1898 was Company C of Battalion A, 1st Infantry Regiment at Camp Goodwin in Walnut Creek. Company C was formed out of men who had deserted from the Mexican War and were discharged by order of President McKinley on July 4th following a meeting at Fort Point Marina in San Francisco Bay. The battalion was mustered into service on October 15th with Captain John Leland as commander. The unit traveled to San Francisco where it relieved Companies G and H of Battalion E, 1st Infantry Regiment at Fort Mason after days of combat against hostile Indians along Telegraph Hill (now Geary Boulevard). In 1903 Captain Leland's battalion arrived in Omaha Beach during World War I as part of III Corps under General Pershing's First American Army Minnesota Expeditionary Force commanded by General John Joffe USMC commandant at Anzio beachhead north-west of Rome Italy while other units landed ashore including 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines/5th Marine Division disembarking November 10th 1915 On December 11th 1915 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines/5th Marine Division disembarking from Landing Craft Tank(LCT)s participated in battle for control over Rojo Beach before withdrawing December 12TH leaving Pisa Harbor January 7 1916 forward moving towards CasertaJanuary 9 1916 these operations marked end phase amphibious assault on mainland Italy during WWI Company C sailed back to America on USS Pennsylvania January 13 1916 disembarking at New York City February 3rd 1916 Captain Leland's battalion returned home via steamboat USS MissouriMarch 25 1916 landing troops At Alameda March 26 1916 company moved north to Hayward April 6 1916 became companies F & G attached to 19TH Infantry Brigade under command Major General George Armstrong Williams USMA commanding officer First American Armies Western Front April 8 1916 until May 5 1917 when brigade departed France for GermanyApril 24 1917 relieved by Third American Brigade August 1914 establishment here permanent

Walnut Creek was founded in 1847 by Nathaniel Keene and his wife Ruth, who leased land from the Hetch Hetchy Company to start a mill. The first mill produced flour for local consumption and also manufactured cannons for the California militia. In 1852, the Keenes built a larger mill on the same site which still operates today. The population of Walnut Creek was estimated at 11,500 in 2000 but had declined to 9,000 by 2010

Walnut Creek is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is part of the Richmond–San Rafael Area. The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who called it "Wat-a-lai". The first white person to set foot on the present site of Walnut Creek was David Chalfant in 1849. He built a house here and named it after his father's home in England, Watlington Hill. In 1852, John Sutter discovered and mined gold near modern day Walnut Creek. This led to an influx of settlers and businesses into the area and by 1870, there were about 150 people living in Walnut Creek. By 1880, however, the population had grown to 1,500 people because of new gold fields nearby. In 1892 walnuts became a common crop in this area because of improved irrigation systems brought over from Northern California by wagon trains carrying goods back and forth between San Francisco and Sacramento. During World War II many residents worked on military plants such as Kaiser Aluminum Company or Lockheed Aircraft Corporation located outside of town; some also served in the U.S Army during World War II as soldiers or sailors/Mariners (the last concentration being at Camp Pendleton). In 1954 walnuts were removed from our local diet due to health concerns related to their high saturated fat content; they have since been replaced with other nuts although they are still used occasionally for coating furniture or candy bars Some early pioneers: George Washington Carver (1847-1922), Wm Henson (1851-1937), Solomon Northrop Grumman (1920-1998)
