The valley is named for the abundance of walnuts that were grown hereabouts. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish missionaries who came to California in 1821. They found walnuts growing abundantly and brought them back with them to Spain. From there they spread word of this valuable fruit around the world. While farming was still a minor activity in Contra Costa County, early settlers began building homes on hills overlooking the valley.
