The name Walnut Creek comes from the nutmeg tree (Acer nigrum) that grows in its area. In 1776 Colonel George Washington founded what would become Berkeley on land he purchased near Walnut Creek. In 1853, J.D. Salinger lived for a time in Walnut Creek with his family before he moved to New York City. The Mayflower settled here in 1620 after sailing from England with over 100 passengers and goods including walnuts and other nuts. The first European settlement in Contra Costa County was made by Spaniards working for Don Diego de Alvarado on Rancho San Pablo east ofpresent-day Walnut Creek during the mid-1700s. By 1800, about 50 families had settled around Hetch Hetchy Valley between Antioch and Concordia rivers because of good grazing lands available thereabouts under Spanish rule. When California became part of the United States in 1850, many people left Santa Clara County for new opportunities in defiance of Mexican authorities who wanted them to remain loyal to Mexico while American settlers formed their own communities along the Santa Cruz Mountains eastern border with Oregon Territory (now Cascade County). A few years later when hostilities subsided as America achieved independence from Spain, small numbers of Californios returned home but most decided to stay where they were and start new lives among their old friends who had already adapted well to life outside Mexico City or Tijuana Province (then part of modern Baja California). Walnut Creek is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Walnut Creek was founded in 1800 by Captain James Hutton and his wife Marilla Bicknell. The name "Walnut" comes from an early oak tree that grew near the town site. The first post office in Walnut Creek was established on October 15, 1857, and was called Oakville. On November 5, 1860, the office became downtown Walnut Creek when it was moved to its current location north of Market Street. In 1872–73 John Sutter acquired Rancho Cucamonga from Antonio Maria de la Luz y Castro and renamed it Rancho Santa Clara de los Nietos after his father-in-law's family land grant in that area. The new name reflected Spanish thoughts on walnuts as a type of fruit because they were not yet ready for harvest according to Mexican custom which granted only major crops such as maize (corn) and cotton licenses for commercial production until they were properly dried and stored before shipment to Mexico City markets In 1907 Walnut Creek incorporated as a village under the name of Pleasant Hill with a population of 326 people. In 1915 Pleasant Hill changed its name to Walnut Creek after merging with neighboring villages Alameda (now Oakland), Kensington (now San Leandro), Orinda (now Union City), Daly City (now Fremont), Mountain View (now Sunnyvale), Livermore Valley (now Millbrae) and South Gate Heights (now Northgate Heights). At this time there were also two towns located east of Walnut Creek named Yuba City and Dixon Hills; however these towns have since merged into Contra Costa County In 1971 residential subdivisions began being developed around the then rural community of Walnut creek adjacent to Interstate 680 between Antioch Road/Hayes Valley Road on one side and Mt Diablo Avenue on the other side making use of open space within what had been agricultural acreage prior to subdivision development Walnuts creek has been home to many different types or cultures over its long history including stages in various American Indian groups like Ohlone & Pomo peoples who hunted game below ground while others built their homes above water using baskets made from leaves or earth used for insulation against cold winter nights during wet summers
