Walnut Creek is a small, but growing town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about 25 miles north of Sacramento, and about 20 miles south of San Francisco. The population was 2,883 at the 2010 census. The name Walnut Creek comes from the acorns that are grown here. The Acorn Mill and Grain Elevator was built in 1881 by George Catlett and his father-in-law Thomas Phelan. In 1916, Catlett's son David Catlett Jr., took over the mill and became one of America's leading growers of walnuts.Over time, walnuts have been a major part of Walnut Creek's economy and its social life as well. In 576 AD, Byzantine monks purchased two thousand pounds of Arabica beans from a trader in Mecca (Beirut). After tasting this new variety for the first time, they began to propagate it throughout their empire. Coffee became popularized in Europe during the Middle Ages. One earlyBrewster mention refers to "coffeine russe," which suggests that coffeepowder may have been among the earliest beverages ever concocted. Coffee continued to grow in popularity throughout these centuries and eventually reached North America through Dutch traders sailing through Asia on their voyages between 1609 and 1621 AD. In 1493 AD English explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered Guam while sailing through Manila Bay and named it after his Portuguese friend and mentor—Governor Don Francisco de Almeida—who had also discovered Java about three years earlier. Columbus himself would later name Santa Cruz Island after bishop Fernando Diaz y Gómez who supervised his initial exploration efforts in Philippines waters; however, Magellan's actual discovery would go unnamed until much later! In 1795–96 French chemist Antoine Lavoisier developed what would become known as Lavoisier's principle: water freezes at about 0 degrees Celsius (-18 Fahrenheit), but liquid water does not freeze at this temperature because it contains dissolved oxygen molecules (O2). This discovery allowed tea lovers around the world access to an otherwise impossible beverage: hot oatmeal without having your breakfast ruined by cold porridge! It wasn't until 1847 that Lavoisier finally received credit for his discovery when French scientist Pierre-Simon Laplace published his book Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica under the title Etymologies et Moralia of Plants etcetera ([Paris])…[and] thus finally recognized coffeespeakers as separate species from tea drinkers!

Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 4,362 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is bordered by Hillsborough to the north, Pittsburg to the east, Menlo Park to the south and Richmond to the west. The name Walnut creek derives from Rancho Santa Clara de las Pulgas (now part of Hercules) which was granted in 1777 by Spanish Governor Manuel Acevedo de la Vega to José Antonio Sanchez. The grant included an area now within Walnut Creek. In 1821, Don Julio Castro sold land ceded by Mexico to Ulysses S. Grant near what is today Palo Alto; this land formed part of Rancho San Lorenzo del Arroyo Mexican grant that was sold in 1833 and included parts of Walnut Creek as well as Hillsborough and Menlo Park. In 1851, General James Shields purchased Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1 million dollars In 1850s-60s there were many small businesses located here including groceries store/merchandise market ('Granada' on Orchard Street), lumberyards ('Palo Alto Lumber & Saw Mill Company'), dry goods store ('Foothills Store', later 'Wesley's Department Store'), post office ('Post Office of California', built 1886), restaurant ('Downtown Restaurant', opened 1896), blacksmith shop/forge (later 'Cowboy Forge Shop') and bakery (later 'Bakery Ratcliff'). By 1900 most shops had closed down or moved out while a few survive down Orchard Street such as hardware store( Hardware Emporium ), Chinese restaurant ( China Palace ), grocery store( Safeway ) and service station( Chevron ). Many small businesses closed because industry shifted from agriculture to services due to advances in transportation technologies like automobiles As late as 1958 a local paper still carried an article about "the five best places for apple picking in California" with listings for Cullman, Humboldt County; Red Bluff, Kings Valley; Novato; Antioch; Danville In 1963 Shell Chemical Co., first company in Contra Costa County made large LOCChemical plant here - site current home of Pleasanton High School . It employed over 1,000 people when it opened . also founded Concord Naval Shipyard which produced submarines under contract through 1970
