Walnut Creek, California, is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and has a wealth of history dating back to its founding as an agricultural community in 1849. The first settlers in Walnut Creek were three men who relocated from nearby Richmond, Virginia in 1849. They named their new community after Walnut Grove Township in North Carolina where they had settled earlier that year. The men were John Witherspoon, Andrew Jackson Chalfant and Solomon Greggs. The name Walnut Creek was chosen because of the availability of walnuts near their farmstead. The first Chief Justice of the United States was born here on January 8th, 1789 – George Washington Carr. Carr attended school here until he was 12 years old when he started work on his father’s farm at age 14. After graduating high school in 1814 he went to law School at Georgetown University but did not complete his degree due to illness which caused him to return home for two years to help his father run the farm and then go back to college for another two years before starting practice law again. In 1821 Carr married Martha Pope and began practicing law with her husband under the name of Pope & Carr. He served as District Attorney for Contra Costa County from 1825-1829 and also held office as Mayor of Danville from 1830-1833 before becoming District Attorney again from 1840-1845 where he continued to serve until his death on December 11th, 1850 aged 63 years old unmarried). In 1850 Carr became Sheriff of Contra Costa County and served until 1865 when he resigned because he desired direct election for sheriff instead of being appointed by the governor (the system still used today). Carr is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery next door to his wife Martha Pope who died in 1886 aged 84 years old; they are both buried together beneath Section 7A Plot No: 3762/5426 which is also dedicated To Mrs George Washington Carrell)). Walnut Creek has been listed as one of America's "100 Best Small Towns" by Forbes magazine four times since its inception in 1984 and has been selected as oneof California's " Historic Places" twice (in 1978 and 1993).
Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 21,423 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette–Monterey County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Walnut Creek was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. Spanish missionaries came here in the late 1800s and started schooling the natives about Christianity. A mill opened in 1876 and continued to produce flour until 1922 when it went out of business. In 1915, Ivar Jonsson founded Jonsson Paper Products which became one of America's most important paper manufacturers before folding in 1965. In 1925, Ed Sommers opened his grocery store called "Sommers' Supermarket". In 1951, Donnel Wolkowitz became managing director for Transcontinental Telephone Company (TTC) and began purchasing telephone lines from local companies including Pacific Bell and Southern California Edison (SCE). Hedeveloped what would become known as TNC Walnut Creek which served area customers until 1984 when it merged with Western Union to form American West Communications Corporation (AWC). In 1967-1968, UC Berkeley students organized a sit-in on their administration building to protest lack of access to health care services by university faculty members working for private insurance companies opposed to government control over healthcare services. This event is often considered the beginning of the social movement against tuition hikes at UC Berkeley that continues today
