Walnut Creek is the birthplace of Apple Inc.'s co-founder Steve Jobs and its current home to Google's corporate headquarters. As of the 2010 census, Walnut Creek had a population of 485 white residents and 1,030 black residents. The city is named after walnuts that were found near its founding. The history of Walnut Creek begins with John L. Walnut who immigrated to the United States in 1847 from Germany. He owned land in what is now Contra Costa County and built a cabin on it in 1879. He named his new town after himself and his wife Sarah Jane Addams who lived there until her death in 1922. At first, the only industry within Walnut Creek was farming which attracted many farmers from nearby towns such as Hercules and Pleasanton. However, over time various businesses started up including a grocery store in 1903, an electrical plant in 1945, and most recently an auto dealership in 2009 which has since closed down. In spite of these occasional successes however, Walnut Creek struggled through many difficult times during the early 21st century including several economic recessions as well as natural disasters like the 1994 Northridge earthquake which destroyed much of downtown Walnut Creek and left more than 30% of the population homeless for weeks afterwards. Walnut Creek is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,817 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Walnut Creek Valley. The name Walnut creek may come from the word "walnut" which means "a kind of chestnut." In 1851, Orrin Judd and his family settled in what is now Walnut Creek Valley and started to grow chestnuts. Judd had been working for James Fenton who ran a nut orchard in Stockton. The first chestnuts that Orrin Judd grew were imported from England and he named his tree after Mr. Fenton's wife who gave him the seed: Mrs. Judd's Chestnuts (now part of University Avenue). In 1875, pioneer George Cram became interested in growing walnuts in Walnut Creek Valley and bought some land from Judd. In 1887, he built the first walnut orchard in Contra Costa County with trees coming down from Mount Diablo to yield nuts. By 1907, Cram had 5 acres (20 hectares) of walnuts producing 2 football fields worth of nuts per acre - more than any other person or company in California at that time! By 1918, his trees had grown to 20 acres (80 hectares) with 11 football fields worth of nuts per acre – making him one of the largest commercial growers of walnuts anywhere! By 1922, he'd purchased an additional 40 acres (160 hectares), becoming one of California's leading walnut growers! His trees still produce high-quality nuts today; however today most production takes place outside of Contra Costa County. He also helped found several local agricultural societies during this time including one that helped promote row crop agriculture as well as water conservation techniques such as using concrete tires on his buses to prevent waterlogging during heavy rains
