Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 46,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit Walnut Creek were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1827 and again in 1829. In 1839, James Blanchard landed in Walnut Creek on Humboldt Bay to trade goods with thebay people. In 1840, John Sutter explored and claimed Rancho Santa Clara de las Pulgas for the American East India Company. In 1851, George Hearst founded Castle Rock Mine near present-day Walnut Creek after mineral discoveries at Potrero Hill led him to believe there might be valuable deposits of silver and gold nearby. In 1863, Mexican insurgents under General Antonio Lopez Cerda invaded California while American soldiers were guarding strategic sites along the Mexican border and began an unsuccessful campaign against Mexican forces that would later become known as the Alamo Campaign. On May 6th of that year a detachment from Camp Floyd under Colonel John Chilton surrendered at what is now Lone Pine Ridge amid heavy fighting between Mexicans and Americans (the Battle of San Jacinto). The garrison had included about 60 Californians including 24 women who had been captured by General Lopez Cerda during his foray into Texas two years earlier when he unsuccessfully attempted to retake Mexico City from Spanish forces under Governor Paredes. When war broke out with Mexico in1865, General Ulysses S Grant ordered all American forces out of California except for Fort Point forbidding their use against civilian targets statewide; this order was rescinded only days before hostilities commenced on April 11th when Confederate general Robert E Lee arrived at Ft Point with 15 guns manned by Confederate sailors disembarking from USS "Virginia". At 8:00am April 12th 1861 local time (), Genl Grant received word through scouts that Confederate Brigadier General Jephson's brigade consisting of 10 Companies 1st Battalion US Arkansas Infantry Regiment had crossed our river about 25 miles upstream from our forts located at Benicia (present day Hercules) ...............about 7 miles due east of us on old Hwy 101 southwesterly boundary line ...... these Union men mustered no more than 150 men total ................... they advanced up westerly side creek bed & across open meadow before turning back................. control overifigenous route went down river..................... Federal troops retreated back up bluffs past Presidio where Major Doniphan's 2nd Brigade California Volunteers halted them ......... federal troops stormed fortifications leading to rout.................. several thousand Confederates retreating downriver lost Horses & mules ................. many refugees sheltered among boulders along stream until possible retrieval ...... most returned home within few weeks

Walnut Creek is an incorporated town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Richmond County and on the border of San Ramon and Hercules Counties. The first permanent settler in Walnut Creek was J.S. Goodspeed, who arrived in 1847. Goodspeed's ranch became a nucleus for what would become Walnut Creek Township in 1849; it was named after nearby Mount Diablo. In 1856, George Sylvester established a store and post office at the junction of Eight Mile Road and Ridge Road near what is now Interstate 680. In 1861, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on Walnut Creek's western bank to provide defense against Mexican invasions during the American Civil War. The fort served as a garrison until 1865 when it was abandoned and its cannons destroyed by Union forces under General Winfield Scott Keyes during the siege of Sacramento City (now Sacramento). In 1886, Drury & Halsey began construction of their flour mill on South Main Street in what would become Walnut Creek Township; this mill became one of America's most important early flour mills, producing large quantities of bread for both Europe and North America from 1887 to 1914. In 1898, Rufus Putnam donated land east of his house along Alpine Avenue for a public school system which he called "Putnam Valley School District". The First Baptist Church building built in 1907 replaced an earlier wooden structure which had been damaged by fire two years earlier. The new church served as walnut creek's only brick building until 1978 when a new church was completed on Unincorporated Bayview Avenue across from Walnut Creek High School
