Walnut Creek is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Walnut Creek developed around two major transportation connections: the Central Pacific Railroad and the Southern Pacific Railway. In 1859, one of the first settlers in Walnut Creek was J.D. Payne who built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Payne's heirs platted and named their town after walnuts which they found growing wild in their land. The First Transcontinental Railroad reached Walnut Creek in 1865, connecting San Francisco to Sacramento and Yuba City respectively via Stockton and Tehama County. The railroad also connected Oakland with San Francisco; however, it terminates at what is now Fremont Avenue near Interstate 5 Business Loop east of Walnut Creek proper. By 1887, when most of Contra Costa County became part of the United States following Mexican independence from Spain, walnuts were being grown commercially along Trinity Lake northeast of Walnut creek proper; however this venture failed due to low yields and competition from other crops such as grapes and almonds (the latter grew abundantly in nearby Lafayette). In 1915 two brothers by the name of Harry Wolk began growing walnuts on some property northwest cornerof present day Town Center Drive & Northside Boulevard formerly known as Vinegar Hill Road just south of mile marker 21 on I-580 & Southside Boulevard off State Route 8 nearpresent day Kaiser Permanente Medical Center across US Highway 101 north side entrance).
