Walnut Creek is a community in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Antioch to the east, Hercules to the north, Pleasant Hill to the northwest, and Oakland to the south. The population was 20,643 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek was founded in 1853 by James Waugh as Walnut Grove. Its name derived from walnuts that had been grown there before he arrived in California. In 1863, Jepson Cranch was founded near Walnut Grove and it became part of Contra Costa County. The first post office opened in 1865 and remained open until 1966. The first commercial establishment in Walnut Creek was a grocery store operated by John Atherton in 1887. By 1900,walnut groves were being cultivated for nut shells and other products used in tanning hides. In 1916,the town of Walnut Grove incorporated as a village under the name of Walnut Creek Village Incorporated.
