The first commissioner of police was Dr. John Sutter who served from 1912-1915 and then Commissioner Harry Wimpole from 1916-1918; both men were replaced by Mayor James Meeks after he took office on January 3rd, 1911. Walnut Creek is located on the eastern edge of the Oakland–Hayward metropolitan area and is surrounded by Berkeley and Emeryville to the north, Fremont and Livermore to the east, and San Leandro to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Walnut Creek were Spanish missionaries in 1795. They named it San Lorenzo de las Nieves because of its high altitude. In 1837, General Antonio Lomas surveyed and claimed part of present-day Contra Costa County for Mexico. However, he did not rename Walnut Creek after his unitary county headquarters; rather he called it Alameda del Norte (Alameda North). The new county courthouse was built in 1851 near what is now downtown Walnut Creek. In 1868–69, silver was discovered at Cloverdale in Petaluma Bayou about two miles northeast of where Walnut creek now stands. The town began developing gradually around this point with a few stores and homes being developed until 1889 when an actgrant from Solano County allowed for a general store and post office called Cloverdale Store & Post Office which became one of the first commercial ventures in town. By 1895 there were 11 businesses including 5 grocery stores/stores type G that operated as feeders into larger stores such as Jardine's Hardware and Sears Roebuck & Co.. On July 14th 1906Walnut Creek residents organized themselves into a town meeting due to concerns over water rights issues posed by irrigation farmers living west of them on Canoga Avenue southeast of present day Misery Road. It was decided that walnuts would be grown on their property east of Misery Road if they could get government permission to do so
The Walnut Creek Valley, located in Contra Costa County, California, is a valley formed by the ridges of the Sierra Nevada and its tributaries. The surrounding hills are mostly granite, with some small amounts of sandstone and mica. The valley was first settled in the late 1800s by farmers from Northern California.
