Walton and his brothers as a small citrus farmstead on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The first reference to coffee as a battlefield fuel was in 1805, when General Pittsburg reported that “a quantity of roasted beans [were] procured from the Java Sea for use in our artillery.”1 In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee recommended using coffee as an energy source on his battleships during the Battle of Hampton Roads. Coffee became known as an essential part of Confederate morale and was often used to keep sailors awake during night engagements.2 In 1865, Ulysses S. Grant issued Order No. 12951, which called for all commanders to make “a daily allowance of iced coffee or hot coffee at their respective Headquarters...to sustain the soldiers in battle and enable them to give effective support to their officers.”3 This order helped promote tactical coffee as a battlefield beverage and made it more available for troops on the front lines.4 By 1872, 1 percent of all U.S.'s army's rations were composed of tactical coffee stores- making it one of the most common battlefield foods throughout the 19th century5 The first commercially produced commercial espresso machines appeared in Italy in 1922 and quickly spread around Europe following its success at World War I fighter planes refueling with caffeine from farms near Rome6 One interesting note about this time period is that many countries began producing their own blends (e.g., Italian Roast), which gave rise to what we now know as Espresso blend theory7 However, despite these efforts by different manufacturers, Tactical Coffee remained largely unappreciated until well into World War II8

Walnut Creek is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. The first permanent residents of Walnut Creek were people who came overland from Northern California in 1847. They called their community "Wenatchee" because the Wenatchee River flowed through it. In 1851, a post office was established in Wenatchee and the name was changed to Walnut Creek to avoid confusion with nearby Eatonville. In 1875, Jepson Paper & Manufacturing Company began operations in Walnut Creek and became one of the largest paper companies in America. It merged with American Paper Products Incorporated (APPI) in 1985 and currently operates as APPI-Walnut Creek plc. The company built two large mills on the banks of the river: one near where it now stands and another downstream on Hwy 101 about north of downtown Walnut Creek. The townsite around these mills grew rapidly during World War II due to military production quotas for papermaking required by General Electric Corporation (GE). During that time, many small businesses moved into town to take advantage of GE's resources; some still operate today including M&M's candy company and First National Bank building now home to Legacy Learning Community Charter School
