In 1960, the USArmy moved its installation to Fort Bliss and today it is home to more than sixty-five thousand soldiers and their families. Today, the army's deployment history in Walnut can be traced back to two different periods: during World War II when the army was sent here as part of Operation Husky; and since 2002 when a new installation called Aliso Viejo has been opened adjacent to Fort Apache which once housed RAF Bentwaters airbase. The Aliso Viejo installation is home to both active duty troops as well as attached units from various agencies including law enforcement, fire services, pumping stations, schools and hospitals. It also houses an exhibits hall that displays memorabilia from past military deployments as well as displays about current events or topics related to war or peacekeeping missions around the world.

Walnut is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Walnut is located about 15 miles (24 km) east of Bakersfield and about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Stockton. The first walnuts to be grown in Kern County were collected by J.D. Roberts in 1884 from the bark of Live Oak trees near San Joaquin City. In 1902, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Smith began to grow walnuts on their farm south of town, becoming one of the first families to do so in Kern County. By 1912, they had planted over 150 acres (60 hectares) of walnuts and were producing over 2 million nuts each year; however, World War I destroyed much of their acreage and production stopped until 1949 when they resumed operations with an increased acreage and continued growth until 1984 when they retired from growing walnuts altogether due to health concerns caused by air pollution from nearby industries including tannery operations). By 1970, Walton Strain had become the most popular variety for tree nut production in California with over 95% share of all harvest sales statewide; however this changed beginning in the early 2000s as other varieties became more popular such as Pistachio and Crabtree Walnut which have displaced Walton Strain as the most common type for tree nut production throughout California Walnut has been a primary agricultural product for many years now making it an important part of local economies both hereabouts and throughout its distribution area

Walnut, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of northern California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. A post office has been in operation in Walnut since 1875. The first documented mention of walnuts in this area comes from an article written by David Cook about agriculture and trade in 1853. Cook noted that traders from all over the United States were traveling through this area looking for new markets for their goods. He also mentioned that walnuts were being grown near Stockton, but no evidence exists to support this claim. It wasn't until 1868 when two men named John Wiley and Samuel Morse discovered walnuts growing on their property just south of Walnut Creek. From here on out, it was clear that walnuts would be a big part of Walnut's economy! In 1870, Washoe County was created, and along with it came the responsibility for managing local forests - something which definitely added some spice to the local business mix! In 1885, three brothers named George Wickersham founded what would become Wickersham & Company - one of Northern California's first commercial grocers! Although there wasn't much development taking place during these early years, things started to change around 1920 when Harry Jourdan arrived in Walnut from Redding to open his grocery store. Jourdan quickly became known as one of the most successful grocery operators in Northern California! One important aspect of his success was his ability to develop new recipes which not only appealed to customers but also helped him keep up with changes within the food industry! His legacy will live on forever thanks to his efforts!! Sometime after World War II, many people left Walnut for other parts of California due to economic hardships. However, a few people who remained decided they wanted their own piece of history right next door!!! In 1948 (!), Clyde Hargrave opened Hargrave's Hardware Store adjacent to his home while he attended college at Stanford University - becoming one of the first businesses west of the Rockies open on campus!! continue reading...
