Walnut is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 43,901 at the 2010 census. Walnut is the second most populous city in Santa Clara County after San Jose and the ninth most populous city overall. It is the largest city east of the Bay Area of San Francisco and its metropolitan area has a population of 621,405 as of July 2015. The first known visit to what is now Walnut took place on October 3rd, 1776 by Don Pedro de la Cueva while exploring what is nowSanta Clara County from his vessel "Nuestra Senora". De la Cueva named the location "Mendoza" after José Mendoza, governor of New Mexico Territory at that time. In 1881, James Wetherill improved an existing irrigation ditch near present day Walnut Creek and constructed a dam which became one of the largest man-made reservoirs in California. This event helped make Walnut an agricultural center with many farmers coming to grow walnuts for their own needs as well as trading with other farmers in nearby cities such as Palo Alto and Iremont. In 1906 Alameda county was formed from part of Santa Clara County including parts of Whatcom and San Leandro Counties. The City Council decided to annex all but two small villages within Alameda County - Kensington (now El Sobrante) and Pleasanton - so that they would have a single municipal government for all seven counties making up Alameda County. However this annexation never happened because it was opposed by then-Governor George Condon who saw it as taking away too much land from rural residents while giving more money to Sutterville merchants who were building new factories in Oakland and San Francisco. In 1912 when Spreckels & Co., makers of candy bars began producing walnuts on speculation that they could findugar trees near their factory in Oakland, two dozen people arrived at Walnut Creek just before sunset to pick nuts off the tree! Walnut is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. It is located on the intersection of Routes 111 and 126. Walnut has been a part of the Mojave Desert since it was settled in 1869 by American Mormons who had come toranchs on the San Joaquin Valley. The first post office was established at Walnut in 1870. The name may be derived from walnuts which were then being grown nearby. A mill was built there in 1875 and became an important center for grinding flour for breadmaking throughout California. In 1904, a railway line was built through Walnut and other towns on the valley floor linking Los Angeles with Reno and Las Vegas; this helped to make Walnut an important commercial center during the Progressive Era. The present day shopping mall complex that includes several restaurants, banks, and other businesses opened in 1963 as part of what became known as "The Strip." By 1990, however, retail sales had dwindled and former suburbanites began moving into downtown Walnut buildings such as Main Street Plaza. This changed when developers purchased three adjacent parcels adjacent to Main Street Plaza for use as a mixed-use development including an arena/retail complex called The Arena which houses several storesys including JCPenney Store #1 (now Macy's), Sears Holdings Retail Neighborhood Center (formerly Kmart), Belk Department store (now Home Depot) and walnutspace - later renamed Live Nation Music Center - providing up to 12 million square feet (970,000 m2) of total retail space across two floors with 2 theme theaters3000 Artist residencies(later replaced by 600 Meetingrooms), 11500 sq ft(100% self contained media room) Event stage/entertainment hall with 10x10 VA screen w/ surround sound capabilities after current pro stadium buildout finished
