The new owners renamed the business Gourmet Coffee Company Incorporated and began making coffee from bean to cup under the name Gourmet Roasters Incorporated. The first mention of walnuts in the area that now includes Walnut was in 853 AD when they were mentioned by name among other trees along the Sacramento River. In 1769, Mission San Francisco de Asís named a grove of walnuts near present-day Petaluma after Father Junipero Serra. By 1850,walnut trees had been established at Petaluma and nearby Isabellaville. In 1859, George Walnut founded Walnut Creek Township on his Rancho Atascosa y Buena Vista north of San Bernardino County. He set out to make his land into what would become one of the most productive agricultural areas in California. With over 2 million acres under cultivation by 1916,Walnut produced more than any other farm crop in California that year. During World War II, walnuts were used to produce shells for anti-aircraft artillery ammunition; however their use ended shortly afterward due to restrictions placed on Nazi Germany's production quotas for this type of munitions. Todaywalnuts are still grown for their fruit but are not used as ammunition anymore
