In 1836, Mexican Battalion Sergeant José Joaquin Tejas discovered and mapped the 27 miles (45 km) long (65 km) east-west extent of Rancho Cucamonga which lay within present day Kern County boundaries; this location would become known as Tejas Station or later Walnut Valley although no evidence exists to support this claim beyond contemporary speculation In 1853 Captain George W Kelleys organized a party including David S Walker to explore northeast coastal San Diego counties on behalf of Majors James Richardson and Cornelius Vanderbilt for the US government under contract with King Carlos II of Spain for discovery and exploration of new lands west of Mexico along what is today Interstate 5 between Bakersfield and Chico Captain George W Kelleys reached present day Walnut Grove about November 25th,1853 from where he walked until December 3rd when symptoms developed from thirst so he returned home that night without further adventures Captain George W Kelleys purchased 640 acres (248 ha) adjacent to the stream flowing through today's downtown Walnut Grove from Michael Haggerty on July 10th,1855 This land would form what is now south side streets Broadway & Park Row while north side streets Archer & McKinley remain undeveloped today
