Walnut, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It was founded by Jedediah Walnut in 1848 as a result of the Gold Rush. The town's name comes from the tree that was its original namesake and which people found nuts from on their land. Jedediah Walnut started a nut orchard here in 1853 and it continues to be one of the most important crops grown in the area today. The city of Hesperia was established nearby in 1909, while Crescent City began to grow up around it in 1916. Today, both towns are part of the larger county municipality of Bakersfield. The history of Walnut can be traced back to 1848 when Jedediah Walnut settled here after trapping animals near Capocchio Mountain. He named his new settlement after himself and started farming walnuts, which were then an important food crop in this area. In 1903, he donated 1 acre (0 hectares) to the city of Hesperia for use as an open space and park; this is now known as Jedediah Walnut Park. The first store opened here on May 10th, 1853, under the name "Nuts & Flakes". By 1865, there were six stores operating within town limits - three grocery stores and three hardware stores - along with two hotel rooms and two blacksmiths' shops. There were also several schools (grades K-12) as well as a post office (1853-1909). During World War II, walnuts were a major source of income for local farmers due to their high value for export; accordingly, production increased greatly during that time period. However, during times of economic recession such as those experienced throughout much of 2007-2009, walnuts fell out of favor with consumers because they became less expensive than other types of nuts available at that time. As a result, production ceased entirely between 2009-2013 due to low prices and limited demand from overseas markets; however resumed again starting in late 2013 when exports recommenced based on improved global conditions Todaywalnuts are still an important crop locally but have been declining steadily over recent years because they are no longer fetching high prices overseas like they used to do
