Walnut, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The community was founded in 1892 by members of the LDS church and became a city in 1903. Walnut has a population of approximately 1,200 people as of 2010. The history of Walnut begins with Mormon settlers who arrived in the area in 1852. They built their first homes on the east side of Walnut Creek. By 1870, they had constructed a sawmill and began to trade items related to logging and farming for goods from nearby cities such as Fresno and Bakersfield. In 1893, the city fathers voted to change its name to Walnut after one of their own residents, Elisha Peabody walnuts (1853-1925). At that time, there were only three other towns in Kern County with this name: Bakersfield, Cloverdale, and Sun Valley. After two centuries of growth and improvement within the city limits, Walnut reached its peak during World War II when it boasted over 50% unemployment rate due to military construction projects sponsored by local General Motors Corporation factories across the state. However, following the war's end walnut experienced rapid decline as many manufacturing jobs were moved away from rural areas throughout California because of postwar competition from states like Texas and Ohio. However, due to gold discoveries in California, walnut production decreased from its peak around 1880. By 1890, only a few small farmers still produced walnuts in Walnut County.
