The first coffee house in Wasco, California was opened by Gideon W. Barnes in 1867. The business rapidly became a popular stop for locals and visitors alike, and over the years it has helped to create a rich coffee history in the area. In 1921, Barnes passed away and his wife Sophie took over the business. She continued to run the store until her death in 1949. During this time, Wasco grew explosively as a commercial center for coffee production and consumption, with many local roasters emerging to take on the challenge of becoming leading brands. In 1957, Susie Gifford purchased the store from Sophie Barnes and continued to operate it as an independent business until her death in 1984. Gifford was an accomplished coffee drinker herself and is generally credited with developing Wasco into one of its most successful cafes. After her death,was reopened as an all-day cafe by her son-in-law Rick Majerus with assistance from his wife Liz Majerus until it closed in early 2006 due to financial difficulties. It has been suggested that some of the blame for this closure may have been attributed toLower California's infamous "choking hazard" Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBT), which had taken over much ofWasco's retail space during Majerus' ownership). Wasco is a city in Kern County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 44,822. The town was founded in 1851 by George Wasco and named for his uncle, James Wason. It became an incorporated city in 1907. The first post office at Wasco was established on December 12, 1851. The town grew quickly due to its location near the San Joaquin River and natural resources such as lumber and fruit trees. In 1871, the railroad arrived and helped spur development within the town limits; sawmills were built along Railroad Street and other businesses sprang up around Lake Isabella. By 1907, however, there were only a few residences left in the downtown area while most of the commercial buildings had been destroyed by fire or vandalism. In 1957 Bob Hope moved to Wasco from nearby Tulare with his family following a job offer from then-Mayor Earl Warren during World War II. The Hope family remains one of its largest employers to this day; today they own over 60% of all stock in Wasco's local Chamber of Commerce

Wasco is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 27,527 at the 2010 census. Wasco is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and on the border of Bakersfield and Tulare Counties. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Wasco were Native American Indians who lived along the banks of the San Joaquin River. There are some reports that these people may have been related to the Mono tribe which inhabited California before them. In 1847, José Garza founded Garza & Co., a wagon manufactory in what is now Wasco and became one of Kern County's earliest residents. A post office was established at Garza's business in 1851, but it was discontinued in 1865 because no mail could be delivered from there to other parts of Kern County. The first school was built near Garza's store in 1863 by Wm Henson and George Addison Smith; it served as a Sunday school for local children until 1870 when it became an academy under charter from Mayflower Baptist Church (later Riverside Baptist). In 1895, William Sweeny opened his grocery store across from Garza&Co.'s business on Redwood Street; it would become one of Wasco's most important commercial establishments over the years. In 1907, John Kapp organized a group called "The Knights Templar" to help promote agriculture throughout Northern California; they met at Kapp's home in Wasco to do this after hearing about their success propagating vegetables through correspondence courses they had taught elsewhere. From 1909 until his death in 1944, Kapp directed irrigation work for many agricultural farmers throughout Northern California including those in Kern County. In 1911–12, Harold Dutton ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Fresno against incumbent Joseph Laughlin; during this time period Dutton also worked as an assistant manager at Kapp's grocery store where he continued serving as chairman emeritus since 1984 until his death In 1924 Harry Welch opened Welch Trading Post adjacent to Kapp’s grocery store on Highway 395 west of town; this post would become known as Welch’s Corner due to its importance within local commerce during that time period Drought conditions started affecting central Valley communities such as Madera and needed more water so water tankers made regular trips upriver delivering drinking water directly into small communities such as Atwater and Porcupine Creek towns while larger cities like Fresno got their water supply from Central Valley projects like Donner Lake or nearby reservoirs
