The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 in Wasco, California. The first coast guard station in the State of California was established at Point Conception. The Coast Guard played a crucial role during the early days of California’s statehood and helped protect against piracy and smugglers. In 1940, the Coast Guard Station Atascadero was moved to central San Diego County and renamed Southern California Regional Headquarters. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station Northridge was relocated to Corona del Mar and became known as Northern California Regional Headquarters. In 1969, the Coast Guard Station San Onofre closed due to budget cuts and was replaced by the present day Marine Mammal Research Laboratory on Elkhorn Slough near Redondo Beach. In 1990, a new coast guard station named Tower Hill opened in Petaluma with a helicopter pad adjacent to Donnybrook Elementary School. In 1996, a new coastguard station named Tiburon opened next door to Sutter Indian College in Tiburon. Today, Coast Guard shore leave is enjoyed by individuals from all over America who come for a few hours of relaxation before returning home again! Wasco, California is located in the Central Valley of California. It is one of the most agriculturally fertile areas in the United States. The area was first settled by Native Americans and later became part of Mexico. In 1846, American settlers arrived and started to grow cotton. The area became a part of the United States after the Mexican-American War. In 1848, Wasco was given to George Custer during his battle with General Tomahawk at the Battle of Buena Vista Hill. After Custer's death, the land passed through several hands until it was sold to an group of businessmen led by James Fenton in 1876. Fenton opened up some small businesses and created a center for agriculture that continues to be successful today. The first school in Wasco was built in 1865 as Fort Yuma School by Captain John Sutter and Lieutenant Colonel George Crocker. In 1872, Wasco began receiving electricity from San Francisco Bay Area stations. In 1898, Isabella County was created within California and Wasco became part of it. On February 14th, 1906, a devastating fire destroyed most of town including muchoftheagricultural production done since 1865
Wasco County was created in 1849, and named for Wascowo, a small town in Oregon. The county seat was the small town of Wasco until 1872 when it moved to Yreka. In 1902, the county was divided into two parts, Wasco County became part of Redding County and Yreka County became part of Shasta County.
