In 1860, James Fenton bought land in Wasco and developed it into a small town with a grocery store, justice of the peace office, post office and schoolhouse. In 1884, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill here to produce flour for local markets. A millrace runs through Wasco and irrigation systems bring water from nearby mountains to irrigate crops such as wheat and cotton. Wasco is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The Wasco name comes from the Spanish word "wasco" meaning "water droplet." In 1858, James H. McGee patented an orange growing enterprise in what is now Wasco and named it after his brother-in-law David Waddell who had founded Waddell's Orange Growers company in 1847. The first oranges were grown here in 1858 and selling for $0.50 each that winter. In 1861, George Hearn organized the towns of Porterville and Saugus to be within easy reach of each other on both sides of Stockton River for transportation purposes; this made Wasco one of the most important communities in Central Valley society at this time. In 1865, Jeptha Thayer became foreman of the Sacramento Railroad Company's main line between Stockton and Sacramentotown (now Fresno). He built a station here on December 1, 1865 as part of that line's construction through central valley country connecting these two towns. A post office was established at Wasco on October 15, 1862 with Atherton as its first name; it changed to Alvarado on November 12th, 1863 after troops under Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Linares destroyed a Mexican Mission near present day Alvarado City during their campaign against Native Americans known as Adobe Walls. On May 3rd 1870 Captain John Cone Ulysses S Grant visited Wasco while conducting military operations against Mexican forces occupying Southern California during the American Civil War; he recommended that all Californian General Orders be issued from Campo de la Mesa specifically commanding General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to march upon San José del Rio Viejo - thenceforth called Battle Hill - whereupon they would cross over into Mexico Territory via Anza Springs whereupon orders could be issued authorizing them to enter Mexican territory should hostilities break out there again - something which never happened due to political instability following Grant's visit On July 10th1870 Ignacio Leyes y Arroyo purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) bordering present day Soquel and performed extensive Ranching activities Here including building roads cattle pastures fencing off swamps draining ponds watering trees etc., later known as Imperial Rancho State Park today! ranchos includes most if not all acreage currently zoned Agricultural/Ranchholdout remaining privately held land
