The National Guard was first organized in California on April 14, 1861. The Guard was originally called the Calaveras County Volunteers and it did not begin functioning until July 1 of that year. In 1862, the Guard was redesignated as the State Guards and it continued to function as such until November 1, 1866 when it was renamed the California National Guard. On January 5, 1868, the California National Guard was reorganized into brigades under an Inspector General system and this arrangement lasted until May 15th of that year when brigades were again redesignated as divisions. On October 15th of that year, brigades were again redesignated divisions and on December 3rd of that year these divisions were fully equipped with artillery and other armament. On January 6th of 1870, a state constitutional amendment giving legal status to the National Guard was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. This amendment provided for a permanent force of 100,000 men which could be called up at any time for service in time of war or special emergency. The first national guard unit to arrive in Wasco on this date was Company H (9th Infantry Regiment) from Stockton which arrived on horseback via wagon caravan from San Joaquin Valley Depot northward through Fresno County to camp near Unionville east of Fresno where they bivouacked for one night before moving forward next day toward their destination about four miles away at Cottonwood Flat where they began duty for three days before being relieved by Company K (10th Infantry Regiment) from Alhambra who had also been coming from Fresno County via wagon caravan carrying supplies to Camp White Horse located east of Halfway between Pasadena and Santa Fe Springs. The 10th Infantry Regiment arrived in Wasco on February 8th 1865 having marched from Sacramento through Kern County arriving at Cottonwood Flat just two days earlier than Company H (9th Infantry Regiment) which had done so two weeks earlier. As part of their initial duty here they garrisoned Fort McDowell which served as a Training School during 1865-1866 while also operating five gunboats docked at Yuba River Landing providing cover against Confederate raiding parties operating along the riverbanks southward into Wasco County Company K (10TH INFANTRY REGIMENT) arrived in Wasco on February 8 1865 having marched from Sacramento through Kern County arriving at Cottonwood Flat just two days earlier than Company H (9TH INFANTRY REGIMENT). As part as their initial duty here they garrisoned Fort McDowell which served as a Training School during 1865-1866 while also operating five gunboats docked at Yuba River Landing providing cover against Confederate raiding parties operating along the riverbanks southward into Wasco County In 1875 Captain John Waddell commandeered Lighthouse No 2 located north side Main Street east of town limits beginning operations November 25 th . At some point during his tenure Lighthouse No 2 became known locally as “Waddell’s House” after Captain Waddell himself who operated it until its sale in 1886 By 1902 Lighthouse No 2 had been replaced by modernized lighthouse built atop hill overlooking town Limits opposite main street

Wasco is a small town located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,812. The name Wasco comes from the local word "wascow" meaning "a wisp of hair." The first post office in Wasco was established on April 19, 1868. The first white person to live in Wasco was John C. Fremont who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1847. He prospected for gold near what is now the town of Lone Pine and named his new settlement after his friend and business partner Brigham Young of Mormon Battalion fame. Fremont left behind a number of artifacts including an axe he had sharpened on a rock and some coins from Missouri that remain today as part of the Heard Museum collection in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1868, Wm Halsey organized a group called the citizens' association to improve water supply for residents near Mono Lake. They dug wells and built dams across Mono Creek so that more water could be used for irrigation purposes instead of being diverted away to other areas where it would evaporate or seep into the ground again than it could be used by farmers and ranchers living around Lone Pine and roundabout way back then. Today's observatory at milepost 9 on Highway 395 is one example of how these early pioneers managed their land with technology they had at their disposal- an observation tower still standing today! Wasco is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 12 miles east of Fresno. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Wasco area was first settled by Native Americans in 1847. Rancho San Joaquin de los Andes, now part of Wasco, was granted to José Maria Alvarado in 1849. A post office called Wasco was established in 1876, and remained in operation until 1959. The town site was platted in 1898 by Harry Waddell and named after his father-in-law, General John C. Fremont. Wasson's Mills were built in 1915 on the eastern edge of town and were one of the largest flour mills ever built upstate; they produced an estimated 2 million bushels per year until they closed down in 1984 due to high costs and competition from other mills within a few miles of Wasson's Mill. In 1941 local farmers formed a co-operative to raise produce for local markets using systems such as drip irrigation that had not been used before then on central valley farms. This allowed for early marketing which helped increase prices for fruits and vegetables throughout California during World War II as war production increased demand for these items statewide
