The Wasco Naval Ship Museum in California is home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of Navy ship artifacts in the United States. The museum was founded in 1907 as a naval training school for Marines. In 1941, the navy decided that it needed more ships, so it began construction on two new vessels- USS Hornet (CVN-68) and USS Enterprise (CVN-65). Wasco is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. It is located southeast of Bakersfield and southwest of Visalia. The first Europeans to visit Wasco were Spanish missionaries in 1821. They named it San Miguel de Allende after Santiago de Compostela, Spain's patron saint. The name change may have been due to local difficulty pronouncing "Allende" as "wassoe". In 1851, the first post office was established at Wasco by J. W. Whitman and others with the spelling "Wasso." A post office remained until 1907. The name changed again in 1916 to Wasco because of confusion with nearby Washoe City (the original location). In 1906, the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line from Bakersfield to Needles through Wasco and east to La Cañada Flintridge; this railroad later became known as the Southern Pacific Railway. By 1910 there were three businesses in town: hardware store, bank, and flour mill; all had closed by 1920 due to prohibition issues which plagued Kern County at that time. The population increased slowly throughout most of the 20th century until it reached 2,000 by 1970 when it exploded due to new housing development around town caused by Oil Refinery employment within commuting distance during that decade industrial growth spurt following discovery of oil reserves in Kern County near Porterville and Kingsburg also stimulated further growth rate up into the early 21st century reaching 3,500 residents as late as 2000 although some people are reclassified as part of Porterville since then primarily because they work or live there on a daily basis for their employer rather than residing within Wasco proper

Wasco, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,083 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and its elevation is 4,559 feet (1,362 m). The name Wasco comes from Spanish meaning "west wind" or "exile". In 1848, Rancho Las Vegas Mexican land grantee José Guerra purchased 870 acres (340 km²) of what would eventually become Wasco. In 1851 he built aadobe cabin and named it after his rancho in Baja California Mexico. The first post office opened in Wasco on February 14th, 1853 under the name of Los Angeles. In 1861 Isabella Ballinger married James Waugh and they moved to Wasco where she ran a boarding house for miners during the Gold Rush. The Waughs were among the earliest settlers in what would become Kern County. James Waugh was also one of the original proprietors of Overland Mills which became an important cotton gin and mill town in central Kern County during this time period On December 17th 1870 John Sutter discovered gold along with 7 others at Hollister Creek near present-day West Valley City After years of searching several thousand men prospected for gold throughout southern and central Kern Counties including Wasco before finding any significant quantities by 1902 when over $2 million had been mined there alone On October 9th 1912, Mr. & Mrs. Hjelmstad acquired 640 acres (248 km²) adjacent to current day Redding Township within Willits Municipality inclusive eastward from Nevada State Line then northwesterly limit to Redding Township thence easterly 5 miles (8 km) to water’s edge
