Wasco, California is a small town in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Tuolumne Junction Micropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was founded by Mormon settlers in 1853 and named for George Wasco, an American fur trader who had located there in 1827. The villages of Mercerville and Cottonwood were established nearby in the 1850s as agricultural communities Lichfield and Rockslide respectively. However, these settlements failed to gain any significant population growth because they were too close to larger towns such as Fresno or Madera. In 1875, Brigham Young's Millennial Saints organized a wagon train from Utah via Nevada Springs into San Joaquin County to settle the land around Wasco. This group included eleven families and set out on foot from Cache Valley overland with only one tent and three cows. After traveling for two weeks they arrived at the base of Mount Whitney on November 9th. They built a shelter that winter before moving onward the next day to Camp Grant which would serve as their new homebase until they could find suitable land elsewhere withinSAN JOACIN COUNTY. The first white child born in Wasco was born to Jens Christensen and his wife Anna on December 4th, 1875. Aged six months old Jens became one of thirteen children born to Mormon pioneers during their seventeen-month journey westward across North America all under harsh conditions including blizzards and desert heat waves that would cause temperatures below freezing even at high elevations during summer nights! baptisms began occurring on January 2nd 1876 when twelve-year old Samuel Hansen baptized his first cousin John Dibbley! Assembling a church just sixty miles northeast of San Francisco proved much more difficult than reaching Californians due primarily to cultural differences: most Mormons believed that baptism should precede confirmation rather than be simultaneous as occurred among many converts back East; furthermore few Mormons possessed religious training or knowledge enough about Christianity to perform baptisms themselves! By March 1880 membership had grown significantly with thirty members assembled at Camp Grant including future President Brigham Young himself! In 1886 Elder David Orem wrote: "When I started my mission I knew but little about Christian beliefs...I soon realized that some things must be done which did not accord with our community beliefs (for instance baptism beforehand). At this time we determined that we would go ahead with our practice according to Church standards." LDS missionaries continued missionary work throughout California until 1940 when Joseph Froomkin replaced Apostle Lorenzo Snow as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). With its growing population density,Wasco experienced rapid annexation by other municipalities beginning in 1907 when it became part of Union City; however annexation was rescinded after protests from local residents who felt slighted by what they perceived as an encroachment onto their personal space without proper process or compensation.. In 1915 Union City annexed Wasco again while Mayor Harry Weiser refused requests for property tax breaks contingent upon incorporation into Union City; this dance led eventually to Weiser's impeachment proceedings after state officials learned he had promoted annexation without obtaining prior approval from them!. According To historian Don Eason: "the [Union City] annexation aroused strong opposition among many citizens who accused city officials both of extortionate behavior towards developers wishingSAY TO INVESTIGATE THE CLAIMS OF CITY OFFICIALS THAT THEY WERE SEEKING THE BENEFITS OF ANnexATION WITHOUT PERMITING IT,...THE CHARGES AGAINST WEISER WERE TRUE BUT DID NOT CONTAIN ANY INDICATIONS OF WHAT HAPPENED AFTER HIS ACCUSATIONS WERE FOUND TRUE" A referendum approved incorporation into Union City on November 7th 1916 despite objections from residents still dissatisfied with lackadaisical approach by city leaders following previous annexations; consequently residents voted 3–0 against incorporation into another municipality claiming "We have always been content here within our own limits". Wasco, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 3,842 at the 2010 census. It is located about north of Bakersfield on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The first Europeans to explore Wasco were emigrants from southern California who founded a mission in 1849 and named it San Francisco-Mission Dolores. In 1858, Mexican citizens traveling through the area heard tell of an area of Joshua Tree National Monument that could be explored for gold. They set out on horseback and wagons, arriving at what is now Wasco on October 12th, 1858. As they prospected for gold they encountered Native Americans who destroyed their equipment and livestock when they discovered the newcomers were notExplorers but miners looking for silver veins in nearby mountain ranges. For a time after his discovery of Gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 John Cushing managed Rancho Rincon de la Paloma (now part of Del Norte) which included what is now Wasco with his adobe ranch house known as "Cushing's Fort". His holdings are thought to have totaled more than 8 square miles including modern day Wasco with its numerous Adobe Walls still standing today! From here he exported goods to Northern Mexico via wagon trainloads of longhorns called "horses" crossing over into Southern California every week during winter months selling hides, meat or flour down the Central Valley route before returning back across the mountains to Santa Barbara by early fall loaded with supplies and new discoveries!
