Watsonville is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The community was founded in 1887 by John C. Watson and his wife, Lillie Belle Watson. It became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1989 and has since experienced growth with the arrival of many businesses and residents. The first post office for Watsonville was established in 1887 and would remain operational until 1911. In 1888, John C. Watson purchased 640 acres of land at what is now the southeast corner of Eighth Street and High Street from Lorenzo Dowling. The area that now makes up Watsonville was originally part of an agricultural region known as Tulare County which stretched from Stockton to Pleasanton. After purchase, John C. Watson began to develop the area into a community with some homes being built as early as 1888 and others starting to be erected shortly thereafter including his home on Eighth StreetCW1 which still stands today as one of the most notable structures in town today. John C.Watson also played an important role within local politics during this time period becoming Mayor of Unity from 1905-1911 as well as Supervisor for San Joaquin Valley from 1895-1896 and 1912-1915 respectively while also serving on several other city councilorships throughout these years including 1916-1920 when he became Mayor pro tempore; 1920-1922 when he served as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors; 1922-1926 when he served consecutively on both the City Councils before becoming Mayor; 1926 until his death in office in 1931 having been elected to three terms consecutively without interruption! In 1929, Charles Fenton Spear arrived in Southern California looking for new opportunities following his release from prison where he had been serving time for robbery attempt/arson/murder! Spear soon found himself interestedin founding a company which would produce oil wells near Vacaville, CA under license from Unocal! This venture led him to purchase 1,100 acres adjacent to present day Watsonville along Ninth Street between Center Road and Katella Avenue! Upon completion Of The Well novener 1930 spear sold all rights & interests back to Unocal who reorganized their holdings under another name but continued production until 1984!! It is easy forget just how significant it was that Charles Fenton Spear arrived in our little corner of California during this time frame & started such an important business development here at what would become known as “the Hub” !!
Watsonville was founded in 1847 by Captain John C. Watson and his family. The town was named after General James A. Watson, the hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Watsonville became a Unionist stronghold and helped to keep Confederate troops from entering the town. After the war, Watsonville began to grow as a agricultural community and became known for its fruits and vegetables. In 1902, the city fathers approved an ordinance that established public schools in the town. The first school was built on Fourth Street in 1911.
